Ghost Bands

In February 1974, I got a call from Wally Siebel, the manager at the Bronen Music store in Potsdam, NY. I was in my third year at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, the most northern SUNY campus. Wally was a founder and student director of the Crane School of Music Jazz Ensemble, a 1968 Crane alum and member of the DK fraternity. He got a call from frat brother who worked at the Willard Alexander booking agency in New York City. The agency had a booking in Montreal for The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra led by Lee Castle. Frat brother asked Wally if the Crane Jazz Ensemble could play the gig. Lee Castle would bring a pianist, drummer and vocalists. Wally said he didn't think they could take the students to Canada but he would bring a band and rehearse in the afternoon and concert at 8pm. I was lead trumpet in the Crane Jazz Ensemble and Wally said I would 3rd trumpet. Mike DiMeo from Utica was Lead trumpet in the Crane Jazz Ensemble when Wally was at Crane would be Lead on the gig. Mike drove to Montreal through Albany and got there in the afternoon. The rest of us carpooled, drove 25 miles north into Canada and we got lost or got stuck in rush hour traffic. We got to the theater at 7:30 PM. Lee Castle said "Let's play the beginnings and ends of many of these so we start and end the songs together". At 7:50 we put on our tuxedos and started at 8 PM. Our singers were Helen O'Connell and Bob Eberle, the singers on all the Jimmy Dorsey big hits in the '40s. The concert was so good Wally got calls for the next 8 years for gigs in Canada, northern New York and Vermont and played as Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Sammy Kaye band, Art Mooney band and backed The Four Aces and Johnnie Ray. I missed gigs in 1978-1980 while I was at University of Miami and played in that area. The last gig I with Wally for the for Jimmy Dorsey Orch at Skidmore College in 1982. I got there and found signs for The Wally Siebel Big Band. The booking agency had double booked the Dorsey Orch so Wally brought his music and stands.
