The Music Comes First

For the 17 piece Stage Music Big Band, the music comes first and foremost. The concept and driving force motivating this group is the decision of its members to play a huge variety of music that touches on many genres. Included in their arsenal of charts you will hear Swing, Bop, Rock, Latin, Samba, Funk, R&B and selections that you might even hear at some symphony orchestra concerts.

To accomplish this demands players whose backgrounds and training can tackle multiple styles of playing and whose dedication to the music leaves little room for compromise.

The SMBB formed inOctober of 2008 in Utica, NY and began playing in public within a month of their first contact with one another. The idea for this group developed after the former Utica College Stage Band dissolved. With the void left by the UCSB, former members Scott Madonia, Curtis Karwacki and Joe Karwacki met and discussed the idea of forming another group, but this time to explore a wider variety of music. After much searching for new charts, the excitement over the musical selections was immediate and soon their networking of other local musical talents led to the discovery that they were not the only ones in search of a venue to express themsleves in a multitude of styles and songs.

Featured charts include compositions and songs by Lennon/McCartney, Miles Davis, Earth Wind and Fire, Tower of Power, Charlie Mingus and Charlie Parker, Weather Report, Marvin Gaye, The Police, Chicago, Danny Elfman, Jerome Kern, Oscar Hammerstein, Stevie Wonder, Yoko Kanno, Leonard Bernstein, Isaac Hayes and many more.
