Maynard Ferguson and Mike Axel played in the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra
Maynard Ferguson came to the US from Montreal in 1948 to play with the Stan Kenton Band. Kenton's band had been disbanded so Ferguson played in bands of Jimmy Dorsey, Boyd Raeburn and Charlie Barnett. Stan Kenton started his Innovations Orchestra in 1950. On YouTube I have seen and heard Maynard Ferguson featured on Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" with Jimmy Orchestra in 1948 or '49 when he was 20 years old and playing Shorty Rogers's "Maynard Ferguson" with Stan Kenton on the Ed Sullivan in 1950.
Mike Axel played in the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra led by Lee Castle in Montreal in 1974 when he was 20 years old. More on Ghost Bands
